Responsible Gaming
Most people play, enjoy it and stop. For some it gets harder to stop, and that can happen to anyone who has been having a perfectly ordinary time up to that point. This page is here for both groups: the tools that keep play inside a budget, and the help that exists when it has already moved outside one.
One rule underpins everything else. Gambling is a way of spending money on entertainment, not a way of making it, and the only stake that is ever sensible is one you can lose without it changing your week.
Tools That Keep You in Control
Every licensed operator listed on this site gives you controls inside your own account, usually in the same menu as your details. Deposit limits are the blunt and effective one - pick a daily, weekly or monthly ceiling and the cashier will not take more. Lowering a limit takes effect immediately; raising one waits out a cooling-off period, which is the point of it.
Alongside those sit loss limits, which cap what can go down rather than what goes in, and session reminders that interrupt play to tell you how long you have been at it. Both are more useful than they sound at two in the morning. A time-out blocks your account for a short stretch, usually anywhere from a day to six weeks, and a self-exclusion does the same for months or years and cannot be undone early. During either, promotional emails stop.
Your transaction history is worth reading once a month even if nothing feels wrong. It is the one record that does not flatter anybody, and a total for the month is far more informative than a memory of it.
Signs Worth Taking Seriously
The warning signs are rarely dramatic. Going back to win back what you just lost is the classic one. So is playing with money that was meant for a bill, borrowing to keep going, or being vague with people close to you about how much a session cost. Feeling restless when you are not playing, raising stakes to get the same feeling as before, or logging on to escape a bad day rather than to enjoy a good one all belong on the same list.
None of these means anything has gone irreversibly wrong. They mean it is worth stopping and looking at the numbers, and that is easier to do early than late.
Protecting Under-18s
Gambling is for adults. The legal age is 18 in the United Kingdom and in most of the markets covered here, but not all of them: it is 21 in Belgium and in Greece, and in Canada it is 18 or 19 depending on the province. Licensed operators verify identity and age before a first payout and often before a first deposit. If you share a device with children, filtering software such as GamBlock, Betfilter or Net Nanny will block gambling sites at the device level, and keeping payment details out of an unlocked browser matters just as much.
Where to Get Help, Country by Country
The services below are free unless the row says otherwise, and they are confidential - you do not have to give your name, and they exist to talk, not to judge. Find your country and use the line for it rather than an international number, because local advisers know the local self-exclusion schemes.

British players also have GAMSTOP, a free national scheme that blocks access to every operator holding a Commission licence in a single registration, for six months, one year or five years. It cannot be lifted before the term ends, and it does not reach operators licensed elsewhere - those have their own self-exclusion tools inside the account, and they need to be set separately. GamCare offers free treatment and one-to-one support as well as the phone line, and GambleAware publishes a self-assessment worth ten minutes of anyone's time.
